EDX AutoUpdate and Manual Update Fails to Update

Problem

With a new update available, opening EDX Software does not display the Update Available dialog box pop up. Going to the Help Menu and choosing Check for Program Update does not display the dialog box pop up either.

Solution

  1. Navigate to c:\ProgramData\EDX\config\ and open the edx.ini file in a text editor. Look for the following entries:
    [UPDATER]
    remindMe=01/01/2050

    If the date is 12/31/9999, this means the reminder feature is disabled and the updater window will never pop up. If it’s any other date, that’s the date you’ll start getting reminders.

    To solve both issues, reset the date to the current date to start getting reminders again.

  2. If the above doesn’t apply or solve the problem, it’s time to check and see if the update service can be reached. Copy and paste the following link into a browser window and hit enter.

    https://charon.edx.com/EDXUpdater.svc/IsAlive

    It should return a screen that displays “true” in the upper left corner. If you get any other message, screen capture the message and create a ticket through the EDX Support Portal.

  3. If the service test returns true, but you still can’t get updates, create a ticket through the EDX Customer Portal to schedule time for additional troubleshooting steps.
