How to Setup Cirrus Terrain and Clutter Data

This article covers the steps required to setup Cirrus terrain and clutter data in SignalPro

Step-by-step guide

Requirements

  • Max HASP key (green), Network Key (red), Cirrus Licensing (cloud based)

  • SignalPro 8.4.0 or higher (not compatible with Signal)

  • Cirrus encrypted terrain (.pte) and/or encrypted clutter (.gce) data tiles for the study area

    • Terrain data - composed of 10-meter resolution data for 1 degree tiles - example: 44n123w_10m.pte

      • tiles are designated by a west offset degree, so for degree 44N122W would need terrain tile 44n123w_10m.pte

    • Clutter data - composed of 1-meter or 5 meter resolution data for 1/16 degree tiles (16 tiles cover 1 degree)  laid out in a 4 row by 4 column grid, starting bottom to top and left to right.

      • tiles are designated by a west offset degree and by degree row (r) and column (c), so for degree 44N122W:  clutter tile 123w44n_r1_c1_us1m.gce would be in the SW corner and clutter tile 123w44n_ r4_c4_us1m.gce would be in the NE corner

Installation and Configuration

General

  1. To download/purchase Cirrus terrain and clutter data, first open the Tile Selector and choose the correct tiles for download/purchase. Be sure to set the right dataset selection.

  2. The file manifest.enc must reside in the <install_drive>:\ProgramData\EDX\cirrus\ folder.

  3. The Land Use(clutter) attenuation data file must be pointed to within the Land Use(clutter) menu.

  4. The clutter and terrain files are each zipped into a specific root file directory at time of encryption.  Currently, this directory is CirrusTerrain for terrain data and CirrusClutter for clutter data.

  5. The clutter and terrain data do not need to reside in the folders designated in the manifest.enc file (which is binary format, so not viewable). However, if the data is stored in different folders, this could impact any future features that may be enabled for the tile selector.  EDX recommends placing these folders in \My Documents or \Documents under the \EDX folder.

  6. Copy/move the appropriate Cirrus files into each folder.

  7. If terrain and clutter files worked previously but now show bad data, one thing to try is to re-download the manifest.enc file. This can be done through refreshing the manifest file from within the Tile Selector, or re-downloading the manifest file from the Tile Selector as well.

Terrain Setup

  1. Open SignalPro and load a project, then in the menu bar, select Databases>Terrain to open the Terrain Databases dialog box.

  2. In the Type drop-down list, select EDX PTE format.

  3. In the corresponding Directory Location window, Browse to and select the folder location where the Cirrus terrain files reside.

  4. Ensure the Active checkbox is checked and then click OK to save the settings and exit the dialog box.

  5. If later, you add more terrain files to the folder, in order to get SignalPro to re-read the folder, you can do either of the following:

    1. Open the dialog box, uncheck the Active check box, then click OK to save and exit, then re-open the dialog box and check the Active check box,  then click OK to save and exit.

    2. Close the project, exit SignalPro, re-open SignalPro and re-open the project.

Clutter Setup

  1. If not already running, open SignalPro and load a project, then in the menu bar, select Databases>Land Use (Clutter) to open the Land Use (Clutter) dialog box.

  2. In the Type drop-down list, select EDX GCE format.

  3. In the Directory Path window, Browse to and select the folder location where the Cirrus clutter files reside.

  4. In the Attenuation data file name window, Browse to <Install_drive>:\PROGRAM FILES\EDX\SIGNALPRO\DATA\ folder and select the current GCATTN_CIRRUS_*.DAT file.

  5. Click OK to save the settings and exit the dialog box.

  6. If later, you add more clutter files to the folder, in order to get SignalPro to re-read the folder, you can do either of the following:

    1. Open the dialog box, change Type to None then click OK to save and exit, then re-open the dialog box and change Type back to EDX GCE format then click OK to save and exit.

    2. Close the project, exit SignalPro, re-open SignalPro and re-open the project.

Displaying Terrain/Clutter data on the map

  1. Select Map>Terrain Data from the menu bar and click the Show Terrain Data checkbox, then click the OK button to save and exit.

  2. Select Map>Land Use (Clutter) Data from the menu bar and click the Show land use data checkbox, then click the OK button to save and exit.

Cirrus data tile sizes

  1. Terrain - 10 meter encrypted (PTE) tile = 456,639 KB = 445.936 MB = 0.435484 GB

  2. Clutter - 1 meter encrypted (GCE) tile = 717,198 KB = 700.388 MB = 0.683973 GB
