EDX software has a project organization structure. A project is defined as a set of transmitters, receivers and transceivers that make use of the same set of databases. Beyond that, the project terminology could refer to a specific system design; say P25, a particular market, or something more complex like LMR with LTE overlay, PtP backhauls and more. Within each project, you can have a number of map views, and studies/reports can then be calculated, displayed and/or printed for each project. Once a project has been created, you can easily access the equipment, databases, reports, and map views for a given project through the menu selections or the Project Pane which is located to the left of the main map view.

New Project

To start a new project, select File > New Project, click on the toolbar, or press Ctrl + N on your keyboard. A dialog box will appear that will assist you in creating, displaying and saving your project.

Using standard Windows file-naming conventions, enter the name of your project in the Project Name box (256 character limit), then select a directory where you would like to save the information related to this particular project in the Project Location box. The default save location is the My Documents directory of the user who installed the EDX software.

The Project Template drop-down box is a list of templates upon which your new project can be based. A template can contain database paths to your external data, pre-defined radio systems, study and propagation model settings, and map view/map layer settings. Using a properly set up template, you can open a  new project in your desired location, and as long as the underlying external data exists for that location in your database paths, you can create a new project where all you have to do it add your base stations and calculate your area study. The System Geographic Location box defines the geographic coordinates of the center point of your first map view. You can enter a city, state, country, or a combination of these names. The more specific you are in your entry, the more precisely located the map will be. After you enter the information, click the Find button. The program will search for the parameters you enter, find all matching locations and then create a drop-down list of the search results. Simply select the desired location from the drop-down list. The center point coordinates associated with your selection will appear in the Latitude and Longitude entry boxes. Click OK and the program will create your project centered at the displayed coordinates. If your location is not listed after you click Find, you will need to manually enter the geographic coordinates of the first map view for your project.

Open Project 

To use a project file that you previously saved with the program, select File>Open Project, click on the toolbar, or type Ctrl + O on your keyboard. The program will display a Browse for Folder dialog box, like the one shown. This browsing features works in essentially the same way as a normal file Browse, it just has a slightly different appearance to make it easy to select a directory name. This type of directory browsing feature is found in several places throughout the program. After you’ve found the correct project directory folder, highlight it, then click Select Folder. Your project will open. When opening the project, EDX software attempts to load all data and locations specified in the project. If the data being loaded does not exist at that location, the program will throw an error message, which varies depending on the data being loaded, and will indicate what’s it looking for and where. 

Close Project

When you are finished with a project, you can close it so that another project can be displayed instead. Do this by selecting File>Close Project. Before closing the project folder and returning to the blank starting screen, the program will ask if you want to save the project. If you select No, whatever changes you’ve made to your project will be lost. If you select Yes, the program will save your changes to the project. If you select Cancel, the program will abort the Close function and return you to the project main map view.

Recent Project

The program is equipped with a handy feature that provides you with quick and easy access to the five most-recently viewed projects. Instead of multiple clicks to find the directory containing a project with which you were recently working, you can select File>Recent Projects to see a list of the five last projects that were opened.
