What is NB-IOT

NB-IoT -> Narrowband Internet of Things, is a cellular radio access technology specified by 3GPP in Release 13, Release 14 and Release 15 to address the fast-expanding market for low power wide area connectivity. The most critical attribute of NB-IoT technology is offering significant coverage extension beyond existing cellular technologies.

NB-IOT (Narrow band internet of things) is a standards-based Low Power Wide Area (LPWA) technology developed to enable a wide range of new IoT devices and services. NB-IoT significantly improves the power consumption of user devices, system capacity and spectrum efficiency, especially in deep coverage. Battery life of more than 10 years can be supported for various use cases. Supported by all major mobile equipment, chipset and module manufacturers, NB-IoT can co-exist with 2G, 3G, and 4G mobile networks. It also benefits from all the security and privacy features of mobile networks, such as support for user identity confidentiality, entity authentication, confidentiality, data integrity and mobile equipment identification. The first NB-IoT commercial launches have been completed in 2017/18. [Definition from GSMA, Narrowband – Internet of Things (NB-IoT) ].

NB-IoT Module

The user must be licensed to use the NB-IoT Module

Once licensed the NB-IoT features will be available for planning and design

To open the NB-IoT Feature set:

Go to → Network Design/Analysis → IOT Networks → NB-IoT

  • The options under the module are

    • Sites

    • Sectors

    • Technology Profiles

    • PCI Planning

    • Neighbor Lists

    • Channels Info

    • System details/Service area

Sites

Under this tab the sites that are NB-IOT will be presented

Here under each user defined group the sites will be seen along with their EARFCN, associated sectors and any CA

Sectors

In this dialog users are presented with the sectors that are NB-IoT.

Sectors can be view per group, per site or all sectors in the project

This dialog will allow the user to set the following

  • Technology Profile

  • PCI

  • Neighbors

  • Channels

  • Channels

  • Frame

  • Predicted Downlink Traffic

  • Predicted Uplink Traffic

Technology Profiles

Within this dialog the users can set up the technology profile to be added on to each sector

This includes

  • Profile Name

  • System

  • SCS

  • Mode (Standalone, In-Band, Guard-Band)

  • Bandwidth

  • Cyclic Prefix

  • CQI

PCI Planning

Here the user is able to run PCI planning for the network

For more please see this article, https://edxwireless.atlassian.net/wiki/pages/createpage.action?spaceKey=KD&title=PCI%20Planning

Neighbor Planning

The user is able to run the neighbor plans for the network and apply to the plan

Channel Info

In this dialog the user is able to config the various channel powers, offsets, overhead and load for each of the sectors as per their link budget

NB-IoT Studies

Once the network is configured the user is now able to start studies

In the area studies dialog there are a number of NB-IoT studies that can be selected
